Before You Buy a Pen Tablet for Online Teaching — Read This 😄

When new tutors decide to start online teaching, something very funny happens.

The first student has not even joined yet, but the shopping list is already ready:

Pen tablet. Mic. Ring light. Webcam. Laptop stand. Aesthetic background. Maybe one plant also, because apparently plants improve teaching confidence. 🌱😄

But here is the honest truth.

"*Most tutors do not need a full online teaching studio on day one.*"

They need a working setup, a clear explanation style, and the courage to take the first class.

The Real Beginner Setup

For a first online class, a simple setup is usually enough:

✅ Laptop or phone

✅ Stable internet connection

✅ Normal earphones (the ones in your bag right now work)

✅ A quiet corner of the house

✅ A meeting app (Zoom, Google Meet, anything)

✅ A prepared lesson

"*That is it.*"

The student is not coming to inspect your ring light. The student is coming to understand the topic.

So before buying every gadget, take one practice class. Check your audio. Check your screen sharing. Check if you can explain clearly.

*Then* decide what is actually missing.

When a Pen Tablet Actually Makes Sense

A pen tablet is useful when your teaching needs writing.

For example, if you teach Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology diagrams, Accounts, or any subject where step-by-step explanation matters, a tablet can make your class smoother.

But it should solve a real problem.

Buy it because *your teaching needs it*, not because every online tutor setup video has one on the table. 😄

My Pen Tablet Recommendations

After testing a few options, here are the two I would suggest:

Best Option — Wacom Tablet (~₹3,500): Smoother stylus, better build quality, longer lasting. Worth it if you'll be teaching equation-heavy subjects regularly. → Buy on Amazon

🌱 For Starters — Huion Tablet (~₹2,100): Light, compact, great for beginners. If you are not sure yet whether online tutoring is for you long-term, start here. → Buy on Amazon

Other Setup "Maybes" — Not Day-1 Essentials

These are NICE to have eventually, but skip them for your first month:

🎙️ External microphone — Only if your earphones sound terrible on recording. Test first.

💡 Ring light — Only if your room has dim or yellow lighting. Daytime by a window is free.

📷 HD webcam — Only if your laptop webcam is grainy AND the platform requires HD.

🎒 Standing desk / fancy chair — Only when back pain kicks in. Until then, normal chair + cushion.

The pattern: buy only when the absence becomes a real problem.

A Real Beginner Mistake I Made

When I started, I bought a pen tablet *before* taking my first class.

Result? It sat unused for 3 months because:

  1. My first few students were on discussion-heavy topics, not writing-heavy
  2. I had not yet learned to use it smoothly under live class pressure
  3. I felt guilty about spending money before earning any 😅

Now I tell every new tutor the same thing: earn for one month, then upgrade. Your first ₹5,000 paid for upgrades feels much better than your first ₹5,000 spent before earning anything.

Final Advice

"*Do not let tools delay your first class.*"

Start with what you have. Teach one class. Find the real problem. Upgrade only what helps.

Online teaching does not start when your setup becomes perfect.

It starts when you finally say:

*"Okay, screen visible hai? Chalo class start karte hain."* 😄
