TeacherOn - Contact Students for Free
What is the single biggest frustration with online tutoring platforms? Monthly subscription fees that you keep paying even when you have zero students. TeacherOn solved that problem entirely — and I am going to walk you through how.
TeacherOn's Free Model
TeacherOn is a global tutoring platform that lets tutors connect with students completely free of charge. No monthly fee. No per-contact charge. Create a profile, message students, and start teaching.
How does the platform make money? There is a premium subscription tier that unlocks extra features like bulk messaging — but the core student contact feature is 100% free.
SuperProf works in a similar way — they also have a free tier — but TeacherOn's free access is more generous in my experience.
Profile Optimisation
TeacherOn is a genuinely international platform — students come from the Middle East, Europe, the US, and South Asia. Your profile should therefore be in polished English, even if you teach in another language.
Headline formula that drives results: "[Subject] Tutor | [Years] Experience | [Specialty] | [Result]"
Example: "Math Tutor | 8 Years Experience | IIT-JEE Prep | 15+ Students Who Cleared"
On hourly rates: TeacherOn has international students, so you need to price accordingly. Rs. 500/hr might feel fair locally, but internationally that is only $6/hr — significantly undervaluing your skills. Even as a beginner, set a minimum of $10-15/hr.
Two Ways to Find Students
1. Inbound Inquiries: Students search the platform and message tutors directly. A well-built profile drives this automatically.
2. Outbound Outreach: You browse posted student requests and message them proactively. This is fully available even on the free tier.
Similar to the UrbanPro approach, proactive outreach is the fastest way to get your first students. The unique advantage on TeacherOn is that it reaches a global pool of students.
Working with International Students
Your first international student can feel daunting. Here is what helped me:
Timezones: Use World Time Buddy (free tool) to identify overlapping availability. India to US: your mornings align with their evenings. India to Middle East: almost identical timezone.
Payments: PayPal or Wise work well for international transfers. Direct bank transfers are also possible.
Communication style: Western students tend to be informal — first names, casual tone. Students from South Asia and the Middle East often prefer a more respectful, formal approach.
My First International Student
My first international student was from Egypt. She needed help with IGCSE Math. I was nervous — unfamiliar curriculum, different communication style, a student I had never met.
But the fee she paid was equivalent to Rs. 1,800/hour — three times my local rate. And the class was simply a relaxed one-hour Zoom session.
That experience changed my perspective completely. International students are absolutely within your reach — you just need to show up professionally.
